“You’re doin it wrong …”

“… But I’m Doin IT!”

One of my ALL TIME Favorite TV Sitcoms was “A Diff’rent World.” It was a “Cosby Show” spinoff. It was set at a fictional HBCU in Virginia, and the main characters, Dwayne & Whitley, were in an ‘on again … off again’ relationship, that eventually ended in marriage. It had all of the elements that I loved: a hopeless romantic relationship, an unrequited love, set at a university, and it had lots of funny people experiencing random drama. It was like a Hallmark Channel RomCom, but with more Com than Rom.

Once when Dwayne & Whitley were having one of their little spats, he came to her dorm after going on a date with a different woman. It was a date that Whitley encouraged him to go on … because she did not recognize how in love with Dwayne she really was … but quickly became jealous of, when he came to describe the evening to her. As he portrayed the dinner and dancing date that he had just left with the woman who was now the … chief rival for her unrequited and oft denied affection for him, he said that he was doing a new ‘sexy’ dance with her called ‘The Lambada.’ He said ‘ohh it was HOT!’ … as he demonstrated the dance for her. He was kinda stiff, so he was not doing a very good job at Lambada-ing.

She said “you’re doin it WRONG!” …

… To wit he replied “YEAH! But I’m doin it!” …

It was a fun filled mess caused by Whitley’s denial.

Laying Down Your “Life”

The concept of that scene stood out for me in reference to … of all things … Healing and Eternal Life. See, I often say that the thing that most often prevents us from SUCCESSFULLY moving forward into the Blessings & Promises of God is our inability or unwillingness to lay down our “life” (See my other post titled: “Pot Luck”: Why Enoch Released All of His Friends).

In Matthew 16:25 (AMPC & MSG), it says:

For whoever is bent on saving his [temporal] life [his comfort and security here] shall lose it [eternal life]; and whoever loses his life [his comfort and security here] for My sake shall find it [life everlasting].

&

Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self.

What that means, relative to this discussion is that if you want to enter into a Blessing or a Land that God has Promised you, the thing that is most often preventing us from fully entering in … is … us and our unwillingness to let go of the things that we … believe or think … are important to us.

Drop ‘Your Life’ & Start Dancing

God had to leave the Children of Israel out in the wilderness for forty years, after Joshua, Caleb, and the other ten scouts went into Jericho to scout the Promised Land (Numbers 13 & 14:1-4). Joshua & Caleb were ready to charge in immediately … but the others were too afraid to proceed.

… They were not afraid to proceed because they did not Believe that God had not Promised them that Land …

… Nor were they afraid because they did not Believe that God could fulfill the Promise that He made …

… They were afraid of the GIANTS who lived in Jericho! …

They knew that God had made them a Promise, and that God was fully capable of Delivering them into that Promised Land. However, they took one look at their own stature. Then they too a look at the height & physique of the GIANTS who occupied Jericho, and they said … “we should not go up and take the land … as a matter of fact, we should return to slavery in Egypt and just forget the whole thing!”

As a result of their unbelief and unwillingness to throw caution and their “life” to the wind … God had to make them wait until all people from that generation had died off … sans Joshua & Caleb … before a new generation would come along. This time, it would be a generation of people who were willing to lay aside their recriminating self-doubts and lack of self confidence, throw caution to the wind, and go take Possession of the Promise.

In other words … they had to be willing to lay down their “life” …

Their ‘life’ in this instance was all of the things that go on inside of us, in our soul, such as: our emotional turmoil, self-doubts, things that we are comfortable with – but things that are not Pleasing to God, … you know … ‘Our Friends.’

Dwayne knew that he was ‘in the game’ … and that was enough. He may have been playing wrong, but that did not matter to him, as long as he was willing to throw aside all fear and doubt in order to ‘start dancing.’ He feet would catch up! And even if they never caught up … his date did not seem to mind … so he kept right on dancing!

The Enemy … Within Me … Is Often Me …

Dwayne realized as did Joshua & Caleb, that it is most important to get ‘in the game.’ Particularly if you know that God has made you a Promise. And you know that God is FULLY CAPABLE of Delivering on His end. The only problem preventing you from Possessing that Promise … could be you.

… Once you identify “Eternal Life”

… And know that it is available to you …

… Right here on earth …

… You have to begin to identify what is ACTUALLY holding you back from your Blessing …

… Often times …

… The enemy to Progressing is within me …

… Actually it is me …

… And my desire to hold on to my old … familiar … ‘life’ …

John 17:13 (AMPC & TPT)

And this is Eternal Life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only True and Real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.

&

Eternal life means to know and experience you as the Only True God, and to know and experience Jesus Christ, as the Son whom You have sent
